Dr Sana Malik
Dr Sana Malik is an academic, researcher, and academic leader in the Department of Architecture & Built Environment at Birmingham City University, with over 15 years of experience in higher education, academic leadership, curriculum development, programme management, and housing research. Her interdisciplinary work sits at the intersection of architecture, housing, urban development, and the built environment, with particular expertise in affordable housing, housing design, housing policy, and the urban political economy.
Dr Malik holds a certification in Urban Affordable Housing from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Her research explores how institutional and stakeholder collaborations can support the sustainable delivery of affordable housing and contribute to more inclusive, resilient, and equitable urban environments. Her work brings together perspectives from architecture, housing policy, urban governance, and social and economic dimensions of the built environment.
She actively contributes to the UK housing and built environment sector as a Research Associate at the Centre for the New Midlands, supporting policy-focused research, knowledge exchange, and thought leadership. Her research interests extend to women in housing, contemporary housing design, sustainable cities, and the sustainable built environment, with a particular interest in addressing housing challenges across the UK and emerging markets.
Dr Malik鈥檚 doctoral research resulted in the development of the Malik ISC Model, a peer-reviewed framework published in a leading academic journal. Her current research focuses on translating this model into practical applications that can inform housing policy, institutional collaboration, and housing delivery systems.
Alongside her research, Dr Malik has experience in academic governance, board-level engagement, curriculum management, and research development, including contributing to research bids and collaborative funding proposals. She is also committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion in higher education and serves as Spotlight Coordinator for South Asian Women in Higher Education (SAWHE), supporting greater visibility, representation, and inclusion for women in academia.
