Vasudaiv Kutumbakam - The world is a family! (Maha Upanishad)
Can art bloom in a vacuum? Do society and culture not influence art and artists? Can art be contained in geographical boundaries? The answer to all the queries above is a big NO. Art and its artists are an integral part of society. Art shapes the socius, and society offers new vistas to art. Artists are mean to be free and beyond any borders.
However, time, space and circumstances affect them. Recently the world has been braving a Covid pandemic. The pandemic has forced us to think again about our existence and identity. Who are we? What are our identities? Do materialism and consumerism answer add to or soften human miseries? Can machines and technology substitute human interaction? Such questions are rising in our heads more often than not.
The pandemic equally affects art and its artists. The question of existence is nuanced, and the pandemic has added gravitas and immediacy to it. Our project is an endeavour to connect art and artists across borders in these challenging times. We are trying to connect artists from India and the UK online, as a starting point to look beyond human-made borders. The world is connected like a family if we could look beyond our prejudices. The ancient Indian scripture of the Maha Upanishada reiterates the same Vasudaiv Kutumbakam, the world is a family.
Our project connects artists online for baat-cheet or dialogue and discussions across the borders. We are offering a platform to artists to share their professional stories, experiences, crafts and journey with their cohorts across India and the UK. It is a unique project because it facilitates communication and camaraderie among the artists. The project also proffers an opportunity to come along for small collaborations leading to short creative outputs. The focus of our project is to foster connections among the artists through dialogues and networking. As the saying goes: baat se baat banti hai or communication is the key to success.
Our project India-UK Creative Industires@75 commemorates the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence and is sponsored by AHRC and Innovate UK. This project aims to facilitate constructive connections across borders among artists and creative industries. We are enabling the chit-chat or baat cheet among them with a firm belief that baat niklegi to phir door talak jayegi, or the talk will travel far, as observed by the great Indian poet Mirza Ghalib!
