We’ve listed six things you need to know about our state-of-the-art centre, including who gets to use it, what it means for the student learning experience and the benefits of project-based learning and teaching.
A hub for innovation
STEAMhouse is a vibrant hub for technology, innovation, enterprise and collaboration, bringing together students, academics and businesses to work on real-world, industry-based projects. The space provides outstanding facilities for teaching, learning, prototyping and business development, as well as opportunities to engage with partners across multiple sectors.
Extension of our campus
STEAMhouse is located on the corner of Cardigan Street and Jennens Road in the heart of Birmingham City University’s City Centre Campus.
STEAMhouse is the home for our Computing courses, and the place of core teaching for Computing students. Around half of the total teaching of the school will be in STEAMhouse, but this also depends on what course you study. Our main computing labs will remain in Millennium Point, so students can get the best of both worlds.
For staff, students, and more
Aswell as being occupied by staff and students of the Department of Computer Science, STEAMhouse is open to the wider ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø community to participate in exciting cross school, interdisciplinary learning and teaching and co-creation.
It’s also home to the STEAMhouse team, incubated companies, small and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) and commercial partners. STEAMhouse provides access to mentors and businesses who are already employing our students, setting challenges and supporting an amazing student experience.
Project based working
The building is designed for project-based working. Students work closely with industry across multiple disciplines, as well as work on research inspired topics, transforming the student experience as part of an employability-driven curriculum.
A space for collaboration
Students are able to work alongside and gain advice and guidance from businesses.
The STEAMhouse Hatchery is a key example of the exciting, collaborative work that happens within STEAMhouse. The 8-week competition for final-year, Master's and PhD students - as well as recent graduates - allows students to develop their innovative business ideas and make them a reality. They have access to regular support from business experts, collaborate with peers and can be in with the chance to win part of a £10,000 prize fund.
Transform learning experience
As it will be project based learning and teaching and cross-collaborative working, this will maximise students’ learning engagement and increase their employability chances of entering course-related professions following graduation.
A key facility that will benefit students' learning is the The STEAMhouse incubator and Millennium Point Pre-Incubator, dedicated facilities for students and graduates to develop their enterprise and entrepreneurship skills, offering valuable space, enlightening workshops, exciting programmes and long-term support.
