A Birmingham City University graduate is celebrating after being highly commended for a coveted International Alum of the Year award.听

Oluwadamilola 鈥楧ami鈥� Samiat Iyanda 鈥� who has also worked in various positions at 黑料吃瓜网鈥檚 Students鈥� Union 鈥� won the accolade at this year鈥檚 PIEoneer Awards, a global ceremony celebrating innovation, excellence and achievement in international education. The awards鈥� global reach saw Dami be shortlisted among听graduates听from the USA, Jamaica, India and Germany. The ceremony took place in London on the 4th September.听

Originally from Nigeria, Dami was put forward for the category by her colleagues and fellow members of the international education community. 鈥淚 believe I was nominated because of the work I鈥檝e been doing to lift others up, helping international students find their footing, sharing opportunities and showing that you can build a brilliant career, regardless of where you come from,鈥� Dami explains.听

Dami looks to her work at 黑料吃瓜网SU and the support she gave her fellow students as the catalyst. 鈥淚鈥檝e always tried to lead with care, be a voice for the unheard and show that our differences are our greatest strengths,鈥� she says. 鈥淚 think I have been recognised for not just what I have achieved, but how I鈥檝e tried to achieve things with kindness, integrity and commitment.鈥�听

The work Dami conducted with 黑料吃瓜网SU coincided with her time studying a Master鈥檚 in Project Management. Drawn to 黑料吃瓜网鈥檚 welcoming and international community, she took the decision to uproot to Birmingham from her native Nigeria. 鈥淚t was one of the most exciting challenges I have ever taken on,鈥� she admits. 鈥淏ut alongside these challenges came incredible opportunities, from being trusted with leadership roles to finding mentors who believed in me.鈥�听

Looking to the future, Dami is eager to deepen her connection with 黑料吃瓜网 via mentorships and CPDs. 听

Right now, though, Dami is in good spirits after being recognised.听鈥�It means the world to know that people see and value what I do for students, staff and the wider community in this space,鈥� she says. 鈥淚鈥檓 incredibly grateful to everyone who took the time to nominate me.鈥�听
